Title: Oxford. Exeter College Chapel (East end)
Creator: Scott, George Gilbert, Sir
Bio/Origin: English, 1811-1878
Role: Architect
Notes: Exeter College's "17th-century chapel was demolished in 1856 to make way for one designed by George Gilbert Scott, which he loosely modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Far too big for its surroundings, the new chapel is a typical and enjoyable piece of high Victorian self-confidence. The memorable interior is lavishly decorated with mosaic, brass and wrought iron. Its fittings include stalls by Bodley, a stone screen and organ gallery, and a large William Morris tapestry, The Adoration of the Kings, designed by Burne-Jones. Morris and Burne-Jones became undergraduates at Exeter in 1853, both intending to enter the Church; but inspired by Ruskin, Rossetti and the medieval splendours of Oxford they rejected conventional careers and dedicated themselves to art."
